Based on Raymond Briggs CBE’s beloved picture book and produced by the late John Coates, The Snowman has enchanted millions worldwide. The story inspired the Oscar-nominated Channel 4 animated special, later followed by its touching sequel The Snowman and the Snowdog, dedicated to Coates’ memory.

Coates, co-founder of the TVC London animation studio, also produced classics like The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine and The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends.

• In Raymond Briggs’ original book, the boy was unnamed, but in the Channel 4 film he was given the name James, to appear on a gift tag from Father Christmas.

• Briggs revealed that the story is set in the South Downs near Brighton, meaning both the boy and his snowman are likely from that region.

• The Snowman was nominated for Best Animated Short Film at the 1983 Academy Awards.

• Since its release in 1978, the book has sold over 5.5 million copies in more than 15 languages, making it one of the best-selling picture books of all time.
